Aphaenogaster spp. are often referred to as ‘Funnel Ants’ and can infest large soil areas. They are classified as generalist feeders, dieting on a wide variety of food such as small insects and other small invertebrates. As the name suggests they make a typically looking “funnel-shaped nest’ in soil. Nest activity in soil areas can be quite significant and collapse of the soil profile and structure can often be experienced.
When disturbed these particular ants can produce a painful sting, using their gaster, (abdomen), as a ‘needle-like’ injector.
